On Tuesday afternoon, comedic legend John Witherspoon was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. The home-going service was truly a celebration of his life as his friends, family, and comedy colleagues came to pay their last respect. And while there were a few tears, there were definitely an abundance of laughs as everyone took time to reflect on the humor the Spoon (as his friends affectionately called him) brought to Hollywood and beyond.
The service began with a moving prayer from Pastor Marvin Winans and then sentimental, yet hilarious, words from David Letterman, who said he had known John for 45 years. Shanice, Antonique Smith, Chante’ Moore, Jeffrey Osborne and other performed musical tributes while Cedric the Entertainer, Shawn Wayans, George Wallace, Angela Gibbs, Bill Bellamy, and Ice Cube, who played his son Craig in “Friday”, shared moving words.
MEMORIAL SERVICE PROGRAM
HipHollywood was also on hand during the funeral service where the family asked that no one wear black. While there, we spoke to many of John’s close friends about what they will remember most about Spoon.
It’s clear the Mr. Witherspoon will be sorely missed, but fondly remember. RIP
