How do you ensure a 4-year-old little girl appreciates her #BlackGirlMagic?! That’s the question Laura Coates asked her listeners this morning.
Coates was devastated to her core; The Sirius XM host could barely make it through her show on Monday morning as she relived the moment her adorable daughter Sydney exclaimed she didn’t like her skin color. “It was so devastating to hear my daughter tell me this morning that she just didn’t like the way she looked,” Laura shared while sobbing, “It broke my heart.”
It all started when a few girls at her school told the young toddler that she couldn’t come into the “princess tent” because her skin was too dark. It was a moment that stuck with the 4-year-old and caused a shift in the way she viewed her own skin. In retelling the story, Laura opened up about thinking that representation on TV would be enough. “She sees her own mother on television and for some reason it didn’t connect to her that there was something beautiful there.” Coates also pleaded with her viewers, asking for their help, “If anyone has any suggestions for me about what I can do to make my daughter feel what I know she is — because dropping her off at school this morning almost killed me.”
Listen to Laura break down on air — what advice would you give her?
