Taraji P. Henson Working On ‘Empire’ Spin-Off Around Cookie Lyon

It turns out we haven’t seen the last of Cookie Lyon.

After Empire’s premature series finale on April 21, fans have been wanting to know what happens next. As previously reported the season’s filming schedule was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic and instead of 20 episodes only 18 were shot.

Now, thanks to star Taraji P. Henson’s first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV, fans may finally get some answers.  The Hollywood Reporter announced the news that Fox and Henson will reunite for an untitled Empire spin-off, and Henson will reprise her fan-favorite role in the potential series.

The publication reports that Empire co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong will re-team with Yolanda Lawrence and Stacy Littlejohn to cowrite the series and be co-show runners as well.  Empire executive producer Sanaa Hamri will direct, and Henson will serve as an executive producer as well.

Fox hasn’t released official plot details—or who might join Henson on the show—but THR reports the spin-off will take place in Los Angeles, where Cookie will make her new home. It’s a fitting location for Henson, who recently launched her production company, TPH Entertainment.

Henson told EW before the season 6 finale that the audience deserved better than an abrupt ending.

“As an artist, to not be able to finish something that you started, that hurts me. I feel incomplete,” she confessed.  “I don’t ever start something and don’t complete it. And so, for me, it’s deep; I have to finish, or this will haunt me for the rest of my life and career.”

Fans first fell in love with Henson’s turn as the no non-sense, over the top, Cookie Lyon in 2015. She became the first African-American woman to win a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal. She also won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for Emmy Awards in 2015 and 2016.

So do you think her new series will be a hit?
