Bob Ross’ afro was fake. And Santa Claus is not real. And consequently, we’re disillusioned with life. If you’re a Lil Yachty fan, it’s highly likely that you’ve never heard of Bob Ross, but to those of us that do know him, well, this is devastating news.

Ross developed a cult following in the eighties as the afro-rocking DYI painter who inspired thousands and thousands of kids and adults to pick up paint brushes. But Bob’s signature ‘fro was the product of a perm he got to avoid paying for haircuts.

“He got this bright idea that he could save money on haircuts. So he let his hair grow, he got a perm, and decided he would never need a haircut again,” says his longtime business partner, Annette Kowalski.

Before Ross could go back to rocking his straight hair, the perm became his company’s logo. “He could never, ever, ever change his hair, and he was so mad about that,” Kowalski says. “He got tired of that curly hair.”

Watching The Joy of Painting, now streaming on Netflix, will never be the same.
