Twitter Debates If ‘Snowfall’ Is Better Than ‘The Wire’

Another day another Twitter debate. Last week it was who has more range Jamie Foxx or Will Smith. This week it’s aimed at TV drug drama’s “The Wire” and “Snowfall”.

After Wednesday night’s explosive episode of Snowfall, folks on Twitter began comparing the two shows. It all started thanks to @MAL who tweeted: Snowfall is better than The Wire in my humble opinion.

(He must been smoking Franklin’s crack to think such a question). Of course chaos ensued on his thread.

One user with some sense responded — “Snowfall will never be better than The Wire because Snowfall is about a drug problem within a city, but The Wire is about a city that has a drug problem.

While another said: The Wire walked so Snowfall could run.

Many people had similar opinions of the FX series being a more watered-down version of “The Wire” because “The Wire” seemed more dramatically realistic. One person tweeted, “Every week someone tweets this bs. I love Snow but nobody fears Franklin or Leon. EVERYONE feared Marlo, Omar and Stringer. They wasn’t running from rivals and getting their asses beat. Stop the nonsense.”

“Snowfall” star Damson Idris even got in on the debate writing “Comparing The Wire to Snowfall is like comparing Diego Maradona to Lionel Messi. Please Don’t! Just love them both.”

Actress Michael Hyatt, who has the rarified distinction of having starred on both The Wire and Snowfall also weighed in.

Time will tell,” Hyatt told TVLine, both diplomatically and thoughtfully. “Think about it. We are sitting here in 2021 talking about The Wire, which started in 2002. That was almost 20 years ago. But we are still experiencing Snowfall and all that is happening on the series as it exists.”

Snowfall is amazing, but it doesn’t hold a candle to The Wire … respectfully. The fact that the FX offering, with it’s Season 4 finale airing this Wednesday (10/9c), is drawing comparisons to one of the most compelling shows to ever air on television is a testament to the late Snowfall co-creator John Singleton’s ability to build a series that has strengthened over time.

“The Wire,” which aired in the early 2000s on HBO, is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and tells the story of a detective who is trying to bring down drug lord Avon Barksdale, played by Wood Harris. The series lasted five seasons and is considered to be one of the best shows on television … EVER.
