Comedian Rickey Smiley is sharing an update on his daughter Aaryn Smiley’s condition after she was shot multiple times during a road rage incident in south Houston.
During his morning show Monday, the radio host revealed that his 19-year-old daughter was shot three times on Sunday after getting food at a Whataburger location.
“I wasn’t even going to say anything about this. I’ve been dealing with this all morning, sitting up here with butterflies in my stomach trying to do the show. My youngest daughter was shot last night,” Smiley said on the “Rickey Smiley Morning Show” Monday. “She’s in the hospital right now… I’m just so angry.”
Smiley spoke with ABC13 and said Aaryn is in good spirits and is recovering well.
“She’s just thankful to be alive,” Rickey said. “She’s more worried about other gunshot victims and, you know, kids all over the country who lost their lives. So she’s not complaining about anything. She is humbled, and she’s grateful to be alive.”
Aaryn Recounts Terrifying Incident
“The tears won’t stop,” she tweeted Wednesday morning. “i’m so happy to be alive. beyond grateful. i was so close to death.”
Aaryn recounted the terrifying incident on her Instagram Stories sharing a photo of a blood-stained passenger seat. She added that she is not able to walk due to nerve damage caused by the gunshots. The length of her recovery is unknown at this time.
On Wednesday Rickey shared a video on his Instagram of of Aaryn’s progess in the hospital.

Rickey Is Now Working To Address Gun Violence
Rickey, who is also the victim of gun violence told ABC13 he has received an outpouring of support from the community and is now speaking with local leaders about teaming up to address gun violence.
“(I) talked to the mayor on the phone for about 30 minutes, great phone conversation, and we have plans to do some things in the community, to try to see if we can try to change the mindset and get to the root of why some of the young people, you know, are doing what they’re doing,” Rickey said. “So it’s been a blessing and a curse at the same time. Hopefully something good can come out of this.”
Rickey wants whoever was involved in the shooting to come forward and face justice.
New Shooting Details Emerge
The Houston Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that a woman and three men suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting at 6898 South Freeway on Sunday night.
The three men were sitting inside of a car at a stoplight when an unknown vehicle drove by and began firing multiple shots, according to police. A spokesperson for the department told PEOPLE that the three men were hit and a woman passenger in a separate, unrelated vehicle was struck in the crossfire
