The 15th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood kicked off Oscar weekend and it was definitely a beautiful calm before the storm.

Celebs like Teyana Taylor, Tank, Serena Williams, Lorenz Tate, Will Smith and more all came out in droves to celebrate this year’s honorees Nia Long, Quinta Brunson, Aunjanue Ellis, and Chanté Adams with Long receiving the highest recognition while Damson Idris hosted the big event.

With so many powerful Black women in attendance it was only right we asked  what were some of the important lessons Black women instilled in them over the years.

“Well I mean my mom would be the first person I could think of and that’s just to always go after what I want,” Kandi Burruss told us about her mother. “If you can conceive the thought you can make it happen. She never made me feel like my dreams were unachievable. It was always go for it.”

Actor Jacob Latimore and Tank made sure to let it be known that the women they had around them weren’t about the BS!

“Wash them dishes, clean that bathroom and make sure you wash you’re you know what…,” Jacob said.

“I was raised by my great grandmother, my grandmother and my mother all in the same house so I can’t give you one thing. I’m just telling you that that level of accountability it’s a different level,” Tank commented. “You gotta be on your Ps and Qs when you’re dealing with Pastor Mary Jean Giles and Mother Lewis and Gerth. They don’t play no games and I think that was the major thing I got from all of these women. I’m still accountable to these women to this day and it’s kind of shaped me into the man I am today.”
