City Girls member JT is getting candid about how prison changed her life and her career.

While visiting Vic Mensa’s new “Abolition X” podcast, JT spoke about her jail stint saying:

“I feel like I got better. Going to prison and coming out, gave me more edge, in my music when I rap and in my voice. It did put a lot of fear in me too. It put a lot of anxiety in me. It changed me completely.”

JT, real name JaTavia Johnson, started a two-year federal prison sentence back in 2018, just as the City Girls were taking off. The rapper was arrested and sentenced after being charged and found guilty of aggravated identity theft.

The City Girls released a documentary titled “Point Blank Period” shortly after JT’s arrest in 2018. In the doc, the artist takes responsibility for the actions that led to her arrest, claiming adamantly that she did what she had to do to survive.

Later in the Abolition X interview, the Florida native recalled how being perceived as “rebellious” as a teen affected her behavior. She stated:

“My whole life, I have always been painted as a rebellious person, and to the point where I started to believe it.”

Since her release, she and fellow City Girl Yung Miami have released a string of hits including “Act Up”, “Twerk” and “Twerkalator.”
