2019 was a wild one. No, seriously, this year brought on some bat sh!t crazy antics, but also some highlights we’ll never forget. So, before the ball drops and we’re turning up in 2020, let’s take a look back on the top 10 moments from 2019!
Y’all. Jussie Smollett kicked off 2019 in the most bizarre fashion. What started as the Empire star accusing a MAGA hat wearing white man of a racist/homophobic attack, ended with the star himself being accused of stage said attack. Smollett was initially charged with 16 felony counts stemming from what cops believed was a false report, but in a surprising move all charges against him were eventually dropped.
However, no one really seems to know if Jussie was in fact guilty or innocent. Of course, Smollett has doubled down on his assault claims, while Chicago PD is still gunning to have him be held financially responsible for the incident.
Wendy Williams Takes On Homewreckers
Finally … finally!!! After several months of rumors swirling about Wendy Williams’ husband Kevin Hunter cheating on her constantly and fathering a child outside of their marriage, the talk show host finally divorced his dirty dog a**. She subsequently went on to shade the mistress, Sharina Hudson and her ex every chance she got.
While Wendy is now living the single life, she is still super shady towards home wreckers, which is why when Nicole Murphy stopped the The Wendy Williams Show to discuss her veryyyy flirtatious rendezvous with the veryyyyy married director Antoine Fuqua, Wendy let her have it.
The Tristan / Khloe / Jordyn Love Triangle
It doesn’t get much shadier than this… When word got out that Jordyn Woods was caught canoodling with her best friend’s (Kylie Jenner) sister’s (Khloe Kardashian) baby daddy, Tristan Thompson, all social media hell broke loose — and continues to do so. While the girls still throw shady subs on social, the world took sides. And surprisingly, although Woods was in the wrong, she came out with the most support. What may have helped is her Red Table Talk interview.
Since then she’s had this to say to the haters.
R. Kelly Finally Gets Caught
Lifetime’s 6-part documentary titled “Surviving R. Kelly” brought to light some pretty heinous allegations against the r&b singer, in addition to rehashing allegations the public already knew about. However, the documentary brought a backlash Kelly, nor his team, was expecting — fast forward to now and the singer is currently in jail awaiting his trial next year. He is facing 18 charges including kidnapping, forced labor and sending child pornography across state lines.
Soulja Boy claimed he had the biggest comeback in 2018 and he carried that momentum into 2019 with the now infamous The Breakfast Club interview and his quotable “Draaaaake???” moment.
Unfortunately, just a few months into 2019, Soulja landed himself in jail for parole violations.

He was released 146 days short of his 240-day sentence and came out 50 lbs heavier. He dropped some music, but that 2019 comeback he was hoping for didn’t quite land.
2019 was a big year for Tekashi 6ix9ine … but for reasons other than his music. The Brooklyn rapper was thrown in jail late 2018 and is still currently behind bars serving a two year sentence for his part in racketeering, conspiracy, firearms offenses and narcotics trafficking charges.
69 had been facing 47 years in prison, but after pleading guilty and snitching on everybody in his entire camp, including gang members he was affiliated with, and some familiar names of the rap game too – Cardi B, Jim Jones, Trippie Redd among others — he receive a sentence of time served. Twitter of course had a field day during the trial and thus the #AskTekashi hashtag and some of the most hilarious memes of the year were born.
Free A$AP Rocky?
2019 was surely rocky for the Harlem-bred rapper who spent a month in jail in Stockholm, Sweden after an over-zealous “fan” claimed he and his crew aggressively assaulted him. For his part, Rocky claimed the incident was provoked by the victim and said he was only defending himself. While he was in custody in Sweden, a number of celebrities publicly showed their support for him, including President Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West and more. Rocky unfortunately was found guilty of assault. He was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay a fine of 12,500 Swedish krona ($1,300) to the victim. He ended the year on an even lower note after his sex tape leaked and had folks calling him everything but rocky.
Kanye West Goes Gospel
Kanye West took his fans to church … literally in 2019. In January he started his Sunday Service, an invite only church service that featured a choir who sang secular tracks remixed for Jesus. It would quickly grow and go from his his back yard to a special Sunday Service at Coachella to churches around the country including Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Tx. West would later reveal that he had gotten saved and would only be performing gospel music before dropping the critically panned Jesus Is King. The gospel album and subsequent film didn’t go over well with fans, but it got Kirk Franklin and Kenny G some love on Twitter.
T.I. Has GOT To Chill
T.I. did a lot of talking in 2019 (per usual), but it was comments about his daughter Deyjah’s hymen that got him in hot water. ICYF, T.I. made remarks stating he attended gynecological appointments with Deyjah in order to see if her hymen was still in tact. These statements quickly turned into a social media sh!t storm for Tip, and rightfully so. Thankfully Jada Pinkett-Smith got him all the way together after he and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Harris, sat-down with Jada and her momma Adrienne Banfield-Jones for an intriguing episode of Red Table Talk.
The Loss Of Legends – Nipsey Hussle, John Witherspoon & Diahann Carol
Nothing was more shocking and gut-wrenching than the tragic and senseless death of rap star Nipsey Hussle. The 33-year-old MC was gunned down March 31, 2019 in front of his The Marathon Clothing store, allegedly by a member of the same gang (Rollin 60’s Crip) that he was affiliated with.
But his fans weren’t the only ones devastated. Many who never heard Hussle’s music soon became a fan and grieved his death. His positive outlook on life, love for his community and family and business acumen were just as intriguing as his lyrics. Needless to say throngs of people from around the world flocked to his store following his death and attended his star-studded funeral at the Staples Center where even former President Barack Obama sent a resolution.
A few months later we would also lose TV icon Diahann Carol. The famed actress/singer, Diahann Carroll died in her Los Angeles homes on Friday after a long bout with cancer. Ms. Carroll was 84-years-old.
Then, a few weeks later in October, TV star John Witherspoon would also pass. According to Witherspoon’s family the actor died suddenly at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. HipHollywood was exclusively inside his funeral and where some of his friends and previous co-stars like Ice Cube, Shawn Wayans and more shared classic memories.
