A host of celebrities paid their respects to the life and legacy of John Witherspoon on Tuesday. HipHollywood was inside the star-studded celebration of life and captured some of the moving speeches, tributes and performances.
One that we just had to share came from Shawn Wayans who starred alongside Witherspoon on the WB comedy The Wayans Brothers. On the series Witherspoon played Pops, the outspoken and hilarious dad to Shawn and Marlon.
Shawn told stories about his time working with the comedian on the show and some of his fondest memories.
Meanwhile, Marlon couldn’t be in attendance since he was filming the Aretha Franklin biopic in Detroit. He told his fans on his Instagram feed that he wished he could be there, but was happy Shawn was holding it down.

Can’t make your send off Pops… I’m broken up about it. Unfortunately, have to work. I know you would tell me “mahlon, go get that PAPER! You better go get them keys 🔑 see… you got a comedy key, a sitcom key 🔑 a movie key 🔑 , a stand up key 🔑… now go get that drama key 🔑 now you gonna unlock 🔐 all that PAPER”. I’ll always hear you. I’m glad every time we said goodbye it was always with a fatherly hug and kiss. So that’s the goodbye I’ll leave it with. #ripPOPS @johnnywitherspoon playing some Johnny Mathis “chances are” in your honour
