Watch: Whitney Houston’s BFF Details Their Romantic Relationship

Whitney Houston’s longtime pal, Robyn Crawford, is confirming longstanding rumors about the pairs relationship. For years there was speculation about Houston’s sexuality and chatter that the two were lovers. Crawford tells NBC Dateline that they indeed were.

Seven years after Houston’s tragic death, Crawford who makes the revelation in her new book, “A Song for You: My Life with Whitney Houston” says she met a then 16-year-old Houston in 1980 at a summer camp, and that their friendship quickly turned physical and romantic.

“Our friendship was a deep friendship,” she explained. “In the early part of our friendship it was physical. It was during that first summer that we met that our lips touched and it wasn’t anything planned it just happened.”

“Not long after that we spent the night together and that evening that we touched and that just brought us closer,” she continued. “I didn’t know how long it was going to last but I was just enjoying the moment.”

Robyn and Houston would remain friends for many years, but their romance only lasted 2 years. In her book, Crawford says once Whitney signed her record deal she told her they had to stop seeing each other, as she felt it would sink her music career. On top of that, Robyn says there was family pressure.

Not only did Houston’s mother Cicey Houston not approve of their friendship, Bobby Brown who Houston married in 1989 was also not a fan of Crawford. According to Crawford, she and Brown clashed so badly that in 2000 she left Houston’s life for good.

As for why she is spilling the tea now, she says in her book: “I’d come to the point where I felt the need to stand up for our friendship. And I felt an urgency to stand up and share the woman behind the incredible talent.”

Crawford is now a fitness trainer and partnered with a woman. They have adopted two children. Her full interview on Dateline will air Saturday, November 9PM ET.
