Angela Bassett + 9 Stars You May Not Know Were Sexually Assaulted As Children

More and more celebs are revealing they were the victim of sexual assault as a child. Fact is 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult. So it’s no surprise some of our favorite stars too have fallen prey to a child predator.

Angela Bassett is one of those who bravely opened up about her experience being sexually violated as a child. But she’s not the only one. Here are 10 celebrities you may not have known were sexually assaulted, molested or even raped as children.

Angela Bassett

Before hosting the Rape Foundation’s annual brunch on October 6, Bassett recalled a“devastating” experience she had as a young girl while speaking with reporters. According to reports from Variety, the actress shared that she woke up to find a man her mother was dating at the time fondling her while she was asleep. The star went on to add that luckily, her mother didn’t hesitate in believing her when she explained what the man she was with did to her.

Tisha Campbell Martin

Tisha Campbell-Martin recently revealed to the world that she was raped by her male babysitter when she a child. Martin shared the devastating details during an episode of UNCENSORED for TV One. “I remember my spirit escaping my body and hovering over and watching what was happening, and I felt myself hurl myself into a corner and ball up and I think I blacked out.”

Hosea Sanchez

The former star of The Game, bravely come forward about being molested by a close friend’s father in an Instagram post back in September. Sanchez said he was just 14 when it happened. The actor said he remembered his alleged abuser telling him, “Trust me, you will like it,” before molesting him in the car. “When he finished, he said, ‘It don’t mean nothing if a guy gives you a blow job, it’s not intercourse, so it’s not sex,'” he recalled.

Common

In May 2019, Common revealed in his memoir Let Love Have the Last Word that he had been abused at only 9 or 10 years old by a family friend. The Grammy-winning performer explained that he had recovered the old memory while preparing for filming The Tale with co-star Laura Dern.

Mike Tyson

In 2014, boxing champion Mike Tyson revealed that he was sexually abused when he was seven years old. He opened up about his experience on the Opie Radio show. It was a one time abuse, when a man Tyson did not know briefly kidnapped him off the street.

Vanessa Williams

When she was 10 years old, the Miss America winner says was sexually molested by a female member of a friend’s family. She detailed the experience on an episode of “Oprah’s Master Class” and in her memoir You Have No Idea. “One night she came into the room where my friend and I were sleeping, and she told me to lie down on the floor,” Vanessa recounted, stating that the girl performed oral sex on her. She wouldn’t tell anyone until she was an adult when it began to take a toll on her mentally.

Missy Elliott

Elliot revealed her past experience with abuse on an episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music.” Elliot said said that she was abused by her 16-year-old cousin when she was only eight years old. “Each day he wanted me to come to the house after school,” she explained. “It became sexual, which, for me at eight years old, I had no clue what that was, but I knew something was wrong.”

Derek Luke

The actor was the victim of sexual assault when he was a child. He shared his story back in 2002 while promoting the film Antwone Fisher. He told CNN.com that his experience prepared him for the role of Fisher who too was sexually abused. “I was molested. I try not to emphasize on me because I feel Antwone had a harder life,” he explained. “I’m healing now. I think tapping into what I overcame and (by) hearing other people’s stories (has helped me heal).”

Queen Latifah

The often-private actress and singer got candid about a slew of serious subjects in Essence Magazine’s July 2009 issue, and revealed she was sexually abused as a child. “I never told anybody; I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arm’s distance.” That is until her brother passed and she told her family and eventually saw a therapist. “When I was 22, my brother died, and I knew that I couldn’t carry his death and that secret. I had to get it off my chest.”

Fantasia

The “American Idol” alum was raped by a classmate when she was in high school. “I had a crush on this guy. He was the best ballplayer, and all the girls wanted him, she told Oprah back in 2005. “One day during a game after school, I was flaunting around in an itty-bitty dress. I was flirting, and he told me, “You’re going to get something you don’t want.” And that’s exactly what happened.”
