A whole heap of actors are coming to Coming to America.
After years of buzz, rumors and talk even by Eddie Murphy himself that the box-office smash would get a sequel, it’s finally happening. Here’s what we know so far starting with the cast.
The sequel to the 1988 comedy — known as Coming 2 America, naturally — will star Murphy and Arsenio Hall reprising their roles as Prince Akeem and Semmi.
James Earl Jones, of course, will reprise his role as Akeem’s father, King Jaffe Joffer, with Paul Bates as royal servant Oha.
Shari Headley will reprise her role as Lisa McDowell, the love interest and eventual wife to Murphy’s Prince Akeem. John Amos, who played her over-bearing father Cleo McDowell will return as well.
And if that wasn’t enough, it’s also been announced that Vanessa Bell Calloway will reprise her role as Imani Azzi, the beautiful princess originally betrothed to marry Prince Akeem.
Wesley Snipes will play a new character named General Izzi, who rules a neighboring country to Zamunda, homeland of Murphy’s Prince Akeem.
Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk) will play Akeem’s daughter, while Jermaine Fowler (Sorry To Bother You) has been tapped to play his son Lavelle.
SNL comedian Leslie Jones has also been cast, but her role is being kept under wraps — though its being reported she will play LaVelle’s mother.
Rick Ross has been tapped for a role in the film and told Nick Cannon during a recent radio interview that scenes were being shot at his Atlanta estate.
Meanwhile musician Teyana Taylor will also make an appearance in the film as well as comedian Michael Blackson.
The costumes in the sequel are sure to be on point as it has been confirmed that Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter — who won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2019 for her work on Black Panther — has joined the team.
The beloved original film follows Akeem as he travels from his African kingdom to Queens, New York, hoping to find himself a queen there. In the sequel, Akeem is about to become king when he discovers he has a long-lost son in Queens. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem sets off to find him.
Coming 2 America, will be produced by black-ish creator Kenya Barris alongside Murphy and Kevin Misher. The sequel will also reunite Murphy, with director Craig Brewer, who worked together on the upcoming biopic Dolemite Is My Name.
Paramount announced that Coming 2 America is slated to hit theaters on August 7, 2020.
