Welp that was fast. R. Kelly’s crisis manager, Darrell Johnson has stepped down.

News came Monday that he resigned shortly after he appeared on CBS This Morning and made some shocking comments about the singer whom he’s been working with for the past 7 months.

Steven Greenberg, a lawyer for R. Kelly, announced Darrell Johnson’s resignation on Twitter on Monday night, saying Johnson decided to take time off “for personal reasons.”

Earlier that day an interview aired in which Johnson told co-host Gayle King that he would not leave his 21-year-old daughter with “anyone who’s accused of pedophilia.”

“You have a 20-something-year-old daughter. Would you allow her to be alone with R. Kelly?” King asked.

“Absolutely not,” Johnson quickly responded, cutting King off.

“I should have worded it better,” Johnson told USA TODAY, adding that he meant to say, “I would leave my daughter with Kelly because I do not believe he is a pedophile.”

A short while later Johnson confirmed he no longer worked for Kelly as a crisis manager or spokesperson. “This has nothing to do with Mr. Kelly it’s for my (own) person(al) reasons,” he said in a statement to USA TODAY.

“Something happened to one of my family members and I made a concerted effort to resign,” Johnson later told Rolling Stone. “It’s personal reasons. No one asked me to step down. I believe 1,000% in Mr. Kelly.”

Johnson also told King that Kelly is not doing well in custody.

“I am concerned about Mr. Kelly,” he told King in the interview, saying that he would “assume at this point” that Kelly is under suicide watch. He said Kelly can’t busy himself with books in his cell because he can’t read or write.

Kelly has been held without bond at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, after being arrested July 11 on separate indictments by the Northern District of Illinois and the Eastern District of New York, which is based in Brooklyn.
