Recently, music mogul Jermaine Dupri had social media buzzing after receiving criticism for saying he didn’t have a favorite female rapper because all they do is talk about sex.
“They all rapping about the same thing,” Dupri told PeopleTV. “I don’t think they’re showing us who is the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping. As far as rap goes, I’m not getting ‘who is the best rapper.’ I’m getting, like, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story… Ok. Who’s gonna be the rapper?”
His comments sparked a lot of criticism with some coming from Cardi B as well.
“Okay guys I have seen a lot of people saying nowadays female rappers only talk about their p**sy and s**t, and now that Jermaine Dupri brought it up, I’m going to say something,” Cardi said in a video response to Jermaine. “First of all, I rap about my p**sy because she’s my best friend and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear.”
She continues, “When I did ‘Be Careful’ people was talking mad s**t in the beginning like ‘What the f**k is this?’ This is not what I expected. It’s like if that’s what people ain’t trying to hear, then I’m going to start rapping about my p**sy again. And second of all, there’s a lot of female rappers that be rapping they a** off that don’t be talking about their p**sy.. and ya’ll don’t be supporting them and they be mad dope. Don’t blame that s**t on us, when ya’ll [are the ones who are] not supporting them.”
The Bronx rapper then followed up with a list of females who she thought didn’t rap about sex but doesn’t get the same mainstream recognition.
We caught up with Jermaine last night at the premiere of Power, Influence & Hip Hop: The Remarkable Rise of So So Def documentary to get his thoughts on Cardi speaking on the lack of support women in music get.
“It’s always been like that, when Brat came it was like that. It’s a hard road for female rappers. She’s not saying anything that’s wrong and people do have to support it more. ”
Jermaine also put action behind his comments and announced that he would be having a So So Def Female Cypher with details coming soon.
The So So Def documentary, set to give a behind the scenes look at the So So Def story we don’t know about, will air this Thursday after an all new episode of Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta.
