Preparations are currently underway to celebrate the life of late film director John Singleton.

A spokesperson for Singleton’s family tells HipHollywood exclusively that there will be both a private and public service for Singleton.

On Monday, May 6 the family of the 51-year-old will hold a private memorial service at an undisclosed location. Despite previous reports we are told that that service is not open to the public and any story to the contrary is completely false.

Singleton’s family does plan to celebrate his life later in May with a public home-going service. The family  wants the community to be apart and also have a chance to say their goodbyes. A venue has not yet been announced.

Singleton was not only a native of Los Angeles but also made several films focused on his beloved City of Angels. Some of his standouts included Boyz N the Hood, Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Baby Boy, and most recently the FX TV series Snowfall.

As previously reported Singleton died on April 29 after suffering complications from a stroke.

He was in ICU at Cedar Sinai Medical Center where he passed after spending nearly a week in a coma. Per the family the Remember The Time director quietly suffered from hypertension. Since his death they have been urging black men to get their blood pressure checked as almost half of African Americans have hypertension.
