The firestorm that is Jussie Smollett’s life may have just received a healthy dose of gasoline. Although the 16 felony counts against him were dropped, the Chicago PD is still gunning for him.
After receiving the good news that all charges against him were dismissed,. Smollett proudly proclaimed his innocence and hopped a plane to Los Angeles. We’re secretly hoping to see him on Saturday at the NAACP Image Awards where he’s nominated.
However, just because Jussie is ready to move on with his life doesn’t mean that Chicago PD is ready to let him. It’s no secret that the police force and Mayor Rahm Emanuel were livid at the State’s Attorney for dropping the charges. And now, they’ve unleashed their plan to get Smollett to pay for allegedly staging his own attack — and yes, we mean literally pay!
The city of Chicago is now demanding he pay $130k for the time, efforts and expenses it took to investigate the January “attack.” An official letter was to sent Jussie, but his people have already rejected the request. In fact, they believe the actor is owed something — an apology from the Mayor and Police Superintendent.
According to TMZ, the Mayor says “they will absolutely file a civil case to get the money. Under the law, the City can actually collect 3 times the actual amount owed as a penalty — meaning around $390,000.”
So, here’s Jussie’s conundrum. Either pay for the investigation, in which he still claims to have been a victim. Or fight it and risk having the case essentially opened back up. If Smollett hedges his bets on option two, “a judge will have to decide if the attack was fake before deciding whether Jussie is required to pay. What’s more, the judge would only have to rule that it’s more likely than not — 51/49 percent — that Jussie faked the attack.” Let’s just say, the odds don’t seem to be in Jussie’s favor.
But, as DL Hughley put it, if you’re truly an advocate, then you must advocate for ALL.
What do you think Jussie should do — pay and hope it goes away or fight and take the risk of losing in the end?
