Jussie Smollett and his legal team have finally spoken. The actor thanked his “family, friends, the incredible people of Chicago . . . who have prayed for me, who have supported me.” He went on to state that, “I’ve been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one.” Smollett called the past two months “incredibly difficult … honestly one of the worst of my entire life,” but stated he was ready to get back to work and get on with his life.
Now that Jussie Smollett has been cleared in his criminal case, his family is speaking out. From day one they’ve supported their brother and now, they say, the fight isn’t over.
“Our son and brother is an innocent man whose name and character has been unjustly smeared,” said the Smollett family in a statement to THR. “Jussie is a son, a brother, a partner, a champion for human rights, and a genuine soul who would never be capable of what he was falsely accused of. He was the victim of an assault and then falsely blamed for his own attack. This morning truth has prevailed and he has been vindicated. All charges have been dismissed and his record expunged (cleared). The painful incidents we’ve witnessed him endure over the past 7 weeks have been heartbreaking and unjust to say the least. While many were quick to rush to judgement before hearing the actual truth, we are grateful that the truth about Jussie has come to light. We look forward to bringing the real perpetrators to justice. We thank God and our village for standing by us during this trying time.”
However, the reactions on Twitter run the gamut. There are those who are celebrating Jussie’s victory right alongside of him, while others feel a great travesty has occurred…

There is no justice if you’re a privileged Hollywood actor that uses identity politics to divide this country just for a pay raise. This is a slap in the face to all real victims of hate crimes. 16 counts dropped! Disgusting! #JussieSmollettHoax https://t.co/f0Rgi9b9J8

Anyone who has a problem with Jussie Smollett getting his charges dropped better keep that same energy towards people who get off for assaulting & murdering unarmed Black people.

I can't quite put my finger on it… but I feel like Jussie Smollett had a Chicago PD "Get of Jail Free Card." pic.twitter.com/HR4vxxAIxZ

What are your thoughts — Does this prove Smollett’s innocence or highlight Chicago PD’s incompetence?
