“A freaking roller coaster” is how Lee Daniels described the past few weeks on the set of “Empire” following the Jussie Smollett’s incident — but the show’s creator didn’t stop there.
It’s hard to believe it’s been two months since Smollett accused two men, fueled by racist and homophobic hate, of viociously attacking him on the streets of Chicago. When the incident occurred, Daniels was one of Jussie’s first supporters — he even FaceTimed him while he was in the hospital.
But, the fallout the happened shortly after caused Lee to have second thoughts. Since his accusations, Jussie has been accused of orchestrating his attack and is currently facing 16 felony counts of “false report of offense.” And while Smollett has pleaded not guilty, Daniels and the rest of the “Empire” cast and crew have faced a wild roller coaster of emotions.
Lee went on Instagram to express those emotions — and also remind you to tune into Empire, Wednesday on FOX #winkemoji.
“These past couple of weeks have been, a freaking roller coaster,” he began. “Me and my cast have experienced pain, anger and sadness and frustration and really don’t know how to deal with it, you know? Because it happened… everything has happened, which you are seeing tonight, happened prior to the incident. And this was not what the show as made for. The show was made to bring America together… to talk about the atrocities that are happening right now in the streets.”
When we spoke to “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson just last week, she had a bit of a different take on things. She stated that she was simply trying to “stay strong” through it all.
