Melanin Magic Personified At The Essence Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon!

Every year it’s an event filled with sisterhood, strength, warmth and dashes of magic all throughout! And this year the Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon delivered again, and somehow even topped itself.

The 12th annual event went off without a hitch with the who’s who of Black Hollywood hitting the black carpet and sharing what the event meant to them. Kelly Rowland waxed poetic about the abundance of beautiful Black skin in the room, Iyanla Vanzant shared moments of kinship and Marsai Martin was excited by all the living legends that she would get to rub elbows with — it was truly a magical moment.

This year’s honorees included Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Regina Hall (Support the Girls) and Jenifer Lewis (Black-ish). And it was Lewis, who has been coined the mother of Black Hollywood, who shared a moving sentiment about how Essence magazine showed her all the beautiful things she could me and what she could accomplish as a woman of color.

And while the event highlighted the achievements and successes of Black women in entertainment, many attendees couldn’t help but talk about one Black man in entertainment who’s had a rough week — Jussie Smollett. Thankfully, it was words of concern and encouragement, not slander and disdain.
