He has been scoring award after award all season long, but Mahershala Ali capped it off with the big win at the big show on Sunday night!

Ali took home the Academy Award for Actor in a Supporting Role category for his performance as Dr. Don Shirley in “Green Book”. He has weathered the media firestorm and bevy of backlash with as much grace as humanly possible, but even during his speech tonight he made sure to assure fans his heart was in the right place. Mahershala made sure to thank Dr. Shirley for the essence of who he was, which, as the actor put it, pushed him to his ends. “I want to thank Dr. Shirley for just trying to capture his essence. Trying to capture Dr. Shirley’s essence pushed me to my ends, which is a reflection of the person he was and the life that he lived. And I thank him,” the actor stated.

Ali Also thanked co-star Viggo Mortensen and dedicated the award to his grandmother who pushed him to think positively every step of the way.

“I wanna dedicate this to my grandmother, who has been in my ear my entire life, telling me that if at first I don’t succeed, try, try again, that I could do anything I put my mind to. Always, always pushing me to think positively. And I know I would not be here without her, that she has gotten me over the hump every step of the way.”

Moving past the controversy, Mahershala’s win is more than meets the eye. It places the actor in the exclusive two-trophy club. Ali is the first Black actor to earn two Oscars for the “Actor in a Supporting Role” category in the show’s 91 years — he won his first for “Moonlight” in 2017! Denzel also has two, but he nabbed his in both the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor categories.
