Regina King’s Golden Globes Speech Is A Challenge To Us All

Cheers to Regina King! Not just for taking home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, but also for her using her spotlight to make sure other women shine brighter.

King was honored for her role as Sharon Rivers in the film “If Beale Street Could Talk”, but it was her impassioned acceptance speech that was the real winning performance.

In the 3-minutes she commanded the stage, Regina thanked all of the most important people in her life, almost got played off by the music, but rallied back and made a bold statement that surely resonated with the crowd. “Times up times two. The reason why we do this is because we understand our microphones are big, and we’re speaking for everyone,” the acclaimed actress explained. She then continued, “I’m going to use my platform right now, to say, in the next two years, everything that I produce – I am making a vow— and it’s going to be tough to make sure that everything that I produce, that it’s 50 percent women.” Slow. Freaking. Clap!

Oh, but she wasn’t done. Regina then challenged those in power to do the same. “And I just challenge anyone out there, who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, in all industries, I challenge you to challenge yourselves and stand with us in solidarity and do the same.” We truly don’t deserve her.

Golden Globes attendees weren’t the only ones giving Ms. King a standing ovation — Twitter joined in as well.
