Mathew Knowles wasn’t about to let R. Kelly lay a hand on his daughter Beyonce, or any of the girls of Destiny’s Child.  Knowles spoke to Metro.co.uk, following the airing of Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly and revealed that he wasn’t so keen on letting the girls work with Kells back in the 90s and even turned down one of his songs.

“I was there, and my former wife Tina was there. The thing with R Kelly was, he liked to record late at night, around midnight. And what was different with his studio was that one room had a recording suite, and next door was a club, with 40 or 50 people dancing. R. Kelly was managed by Sony, by someone I won’t name, and at that time, they would almost force you to record with [their] artists. And R. Kelly wasn’t cheap — it was $75,000, plus travel costs, so we’re talking $100,000 for a song. I personally rejected the song, because I didn’t think it was a good song. Not just because of [his] reputation — this was around 1998, we had just begun to hear some of those things.”

When Metro asked Mathew if the R. Kelly rumors played a role in his future decisions, he said, “certainly, it was both of those things.”

“The girls were 15, 16,” he added.  “When they went to the bathroom, Tina would go with them. They did not leave our eyes.”

Knowles is just one of a handful of artists who have spoken out about the 52 year since the scathing six-part documentary aired. Some like R&B singers JoJo, Omarion and Tank who worked with Kelly and recorded music with him admitted that they heard about his predatory ways but can no longer sit back and ignore the stories of these victims.

The “Ignition” singer is accused of holding six women in a ‘sex cult’, as well as having sexual contact with girls as young as 14. R Kelly has strongly denied these allegations. While the attention on the allegations has ramped up since the airing of Surviving R Kelly, rumors have been rampant since the 90s, when the singer allegedly married Aaliyah when she was 15 and he was 27.

In 2008 Kelly was acquitted of 14 counts of child pornography. Now, fresh investigations have been launched in Chicago and Atlanta into allegations of sexual and physical abuse.
