Mario Makes “Rent: Live” Look Damn Good!

Remakes, reboots and adaptations are difficult to execute. And this is even more true when the original is heralded as an exemplary piece of art. But, that hasn’t stopped Fox from giving us its version of “Rent” and Mario from joining the project — and having big shoes to fill.

If you count the original Broadway version, the 2005 film, off-broadway revival, and the 20th anniversary national tour, “Rent: Live” will be the 5th iteration of the massively successful play. And yet, R&B singer Mario, who will play the landlord Benjamin Coffin III, believes audiences will still walk away feeling the made for TV production offers something special.

Mario also knows that playing the role made famous by Taye Diggs bares a special responsibility. When the “Let Me Love You” singer stopped by HipHollywood, he opened up about possibly reaching out to Diggs to get a bit of advice. He also opened up about any apprehension he has about taking on such a beloved project.

In case you are unfamiliar with the original musical, “Rent” was loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème and followed the story of a group of young struggling artists in New York City’s East Village. The play tackled themes of life, love, economics and, even HIV/AIDS — a topic which was still taboo in 1996 when “Rent” debuted on Broadway.

Check out the trailer below, and catch “Rent: Live” when it airs on Fox, Sunday, January 27th.
