No surprise here — Lifetime has ruffled some feathers with their upcoming special “Surviving R. Kelly” but have they gone too far?
Here’s how Lifetime describes the series:
“In the ground-breaking documentary series Surviving R. Kelly, women are emerging from the shadows and uniting their voices to share their stories. Celebrated as one of the greatest R&B singers of all time, R. Kelly’s genre defining career and playboy lifestyle has been riddled with rumors of abuse, predatory behavior, and pedophilia. Despite damning evidence and multiple witnesses, to date, none of these accusations have seemingly affected him. For the first time ever, survivors and people from R. Kelly’s inner circle, are coming forward with new allegations about his sexual, mental, and physical abuse. They are now finally ready to share their full story and shed light on the secret life the public has never seen.”
But, of course, R. doesn’t see things the same way.
The three-day, six-part docu-series is set to premiere tonight (Thursday), but if Kels has his way, it won’t see the light of day. The R&B singer’s attorney has fired off a letter demanding that Lifetime cease from airing the documentary … or else, a lawsuit will soon follow. They claim the doc is filled with lies and inaccuracies.
But, Kelly isn’t the only one pissed. Aaliyah’s family claims that a woman in the doc, who says she saw the “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number” singer and Kels in a sexual encounter, is nothing but a liar. They too threaten Lifetime stating, “this will not be tolerated.”
ATT: 🚨#TeamAaliyah #Aaliyah ‘s Mom , Diane has made a statement in regards to the lies from the #Lifetime #RKelly documentary coming out. PLEASE RT to make this go viral! The network has responded, in a statement obtained by HipHollywood, saying, “Lifetime has always been a brand that champions women’s stories. The documentary will air as scheduled, starting tonight at 9pm ET/PT.”
So, now the big question … will you be watching?
