2018 may have been the longest most drama-filled year in history. So much stuff went down that we either couldn’t remember it all (at first) or we were convinced it happened in 2017. Here’s 10 of the biggest moments and mishaps some of your favorite celebs made this year. Warning you just may get sensory overload, so we apologize in advance. Enjoy!
1. KANYE THINKS SLAVERY WAS A CHOICE
Kanye West did and said a lot of questionable things in 2018, but none more than his infamous “slavery was a choice” statement on TMZ. To be more specific, the rapper stated, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years??? That sounds like a choice. Like, you was there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all?”
Of course the statement, and his constant MAGA hat wearing ways, had folks in an uproar. And, or course, we talked to them…
Let’s hope Mr. West is wiser with his words in 2019.
2. DRAKE V. PUSHA T
Drake and Pusha T have long traded barbs and diss tracks, but things took a really ugly turn in 2018 after Pusha dropped his Kanye West produced album Infrared. Drake took offence to Pusha claiming he used a ghost writer and called him out on “Duppy Freestyle.” Pusha wasn’t having it and dropped the bombshell of all bombshells on “The Story of Adidon” — revealing Drake had a secret son. Drake had no other choice but to come clean. A few weeks later, on his album Scorpion, he confirmed that he fathered a child named Adonis with adult film actress Sophie Broussard. He also accused Kanye of spilling the news to Pusha. West denied the allegations and posted like a 100 tweets about Drake. Not surprisingly, the two are also no longer friends leaving the beef to be continued in 2019.
3. TRISTAN THOMPSON CHEATING SCANDAL
Days before she gave birth to their daughter True in April, Khloé Kardashian was blindsided by news that her baby’s father, Tristan Thompson was a low down dirty cheater. Thanks to the Daily Mail and TMZ a series of photos and videos were released showing the NBA star with 5 different women. On April 7, cell phone cameras caught Tristan Thompson canoodling with a woman in an NYC night club.
TMZ obtained the footage of Thompson and the woman entering the Four Seasons Hotel around 5Am Sunday morning. The woman was later identified as bartender Lani Blair. They also obtained the video below of Thompson back in October kissing two women at a Hookah Lounge outside Washington D.C.
Then to make matters even worse, the Daily Mail released photos of Thompson with yet another woman. This time from November , also while Khloe was pregnant. Despite all the drama, Khloe gave birth to the couple’s daughter on April 12 in Cleveland. She and Thompson reconciled after the birth and are said to be undergoing couples therapy.
4. MEGHAN MARKLE BECOMES A ROYAL
On May 19 the entire world stopped as an American girl named Meghan Markle became the first African American princess in the royal family. It was by most accounts a real life fairytale. But while the haters and even her family tried to ruin the moment, there’s no denying it was THEE wedding of the year. Prince Harry and Meghan said “I do” at Windsor Castle in London in front of some 200 guests including the Queen … Oprah Winfrey, Idris Elba and Markle’s bestie’s Serena Williams and Priyanka Chopra. A few months later the newly crowned Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced they are expecting their first child.
5. CARDI B & NICKI MINAJ MET GALA FIGHT
Who can forget when Nicki Minaj and Cardi B’s rap beef went from spitting bars to throwing hands. Let’s just say Fashion Week will never be the same after the femcees came to blows at an exclusive Harper’s BAZAAR event. The night ended with a “knot so happy” Cardi B sporting a huge lump on the left side of her forehead while being escorted out in a gorgeous red gown with only one shoe on. The ladies claim to have ended their beef for now but something is still telling us that these two need to hold on being in the same space together for a while.
6. BEYONCE “BITEGATE”
The world stopped after a loose lipped Tiffany Haddish spilled the beans on a possible assault on the Queen Bey! While speaking with GQ, the comedian alleged that an actress bit Beyonce in the face during a party they attended in Los Angeles. If that bomb wasn’t big enough, the identity behind the face chomp was allegedly Sanaa Lathan. While no legal action was taken, Beyonce definitely let it be known that NDAs are a must moving forward.
7. THE YEAR OF BLACK PANTHER
Mannnnn listen. If you didn’t say “Wakanda Forever” (with the arm movements) at least 10 times this year, are you even really Black? Black Panther was more than a movie, it was a movement! Lead by our very own T’Challa, aka Chadwick Boseman, the superhero flick simultaneously gave our community pride and (even more) swag. Additionally, it gave us Black Girl Magic like never before — Queen Angela, Smart as hell Shuri, fly a** Lupita, butt kicking Danai and the entire Dora Milaje — it was epic. Hell, it was so good, it even had you rooting for the enemy Killmonger, aka the ever-so fine Michael B. Jordan.
But the best part, the BEST PART?!? The film has grossed over $1.3 billion dollars worldwide. It is the highest-grossing film of 2018, highest-grossing solo superhero film, highest-grossing film by a black director, Ryan Coogler, and highest opening weekend gross for a predominantly black cast ($370.8 million). Simply put, it is the best!
8. ARETHA FRANKLIN’S FUNERAL
Aretha Franklin’s passing came to a shock to many but it didn’t stop her from making sure she had an over the top funeral. The epic 8-hour ceremony showed us how only a true Queen of Soul can go out with such a bang! From appearances by Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Cicely Tyson, Yolanda Adams, Rev. Jesse Jackson and more to the controversy surrounding Ariana Grande’s awkward introduction into the Black church, Miss Retha, dead or alive, will be talked about for years and years to come.
9. MO’NIQUE GETS BIG MAD AT NETFLIX
Mo’Nique spent the better part of 2018 mad. Like, big mad. It was to the point that she asked all her melanin-blessed fans to boycott Netflix because they tried to low-ball her! The internet responded with a gaggle of laughter and a few people had some stern words for Mo, especially Charlamagne who labeled her “Donkey of the Day”.
The whole thing kind of spiraled with the “Precious” star re-lashing out at some Hollywood heavyweights, including Oprah Winfrey, saying she has never helped her, or the community at large. But, when we talked to Lady O about the whole ordeal, she kept it classy.
But, after all of that, who got the last laugh? Mo’Nique! The comedienne now has a residency in Vegas.
10. KEVIN HART BACKS OUT OF OSCARS
Kevin Hart’s past came back to haunt him in the end of 2018, but surprisingly he was able to turn it around! It all started when old, somewhat homophobic tweets from 2009 “resurfaced” after it was announced that the funnyman would be hosting the 2019 Academy Awards. Long story short, the Oscars folks told he to apologize or else, Kev said nah and stepped down. But, the craziest thing happened … while there were a myriad of folks mad at the comedian for his insensitive statements (from a decade ago), there was equally, or maybe even more, support for Hart and his decision to defend himself. From Snoop Dogg to Nick Cannon … and even HH, many stood by Kevin and even advocated for the Oscars to ask him back!
If asked, do you think he should?
