The tide has turned and the headlines are unkind — looks like Meghan Markle is being royally ousted!
It was all good just a few months ago when Markle was walking down the aisle to marry her Prince Harry. Well, maybe not all good, there were definitely some haters questioning Meghan’s place in the royal family, but the majority of the UK press covering the historic royal wedding waxed poetically about the American actress marrying the the British bachelor.
That is, until the American actress actually married the British bachelor. Since saying “I Do”, the narrative around Markle’s new life as a royal has been royally unkind. First, there were small stories about Meghan breaking tradition and doing things her way, ruffling the royal feathers of the Queen. Then, as CNN has reported, “royal insiders, courtiers and family friends … portray her as a demanding bridezilla in the run-up to the wedding and a difficult boss who snaps at her staff.” Apparently, she ran-off her assistant due to excessive emails and demands.
Furthermore, the press is now painting her as the wicked sister-in-law that made Kate Middleton cry. Y’all, they are getting ruthless ’round here! But, the real question is why? Sure, she’s an “outsider”, being from the U.S. and all. However, she’s also an “outsider”, being the only African-American member of the royal family. And the words used to describe her behavior — demanding, rude, mean, etc. — evoke the oft-used, and very racist, narrative of “angry Black woman.”
So, let’s look at this from the other side of the coin. If Meghan gave her assistant tasks that made her feel overwhelmed, maybe it was assistant, not Meghan, with the problem. If Meghan has been vocal about her wants and needs, even if they part with tradition, is that a negative? And if Kate really did cry during a dress fitting, is it Markle’s fault or does Kate need thicker skin?
The whole point is that this is all hearsay, with the slant firmly against Meghan. Maybe they should all give the pregnant newbie, who’s just trying to fit into a very rigid family, a break! And furthermore, learn from the error of the past — This is not the first time the press has done this to a new royal. Princess Diana, Prince Harry’s mother, suffered the same scrutiny and unfortunately, the incessant press contributed to her demise. We pray a different fate for Markle.
