Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade welcomed their first child together, daughter Kaavia James, to the world almost one month ago (November 7th). And since her arrival, the sheer joy, love and excitement the two share is palpable — especially on their Instagram pages, and also her own, @kaaviajames.
And since the announcement of Kaavia’s arrival, there have been an overload of thoughtful, kind, encouraging words on every pic of the little beauty. But, unfortunately there have also been the negative comments … since day one. What could be negative about the miraculous birth of a beautiful baby girl? Well, the negative Nancys actually ridiculed Gabby for “trying to look like she had given birth” even though Kaavia arrived via surrogate.

The gorgeous actress took the high road and decided against clapping back at her detractors. But now, she, along with hubby wade, will finally open up about the hurtful ridicule in a conversation with Oprah Winfrey. Lady O visited the couple just days after they brought their baby girl home and talked to them about their road to parenthood and their experience with surrogacy, plus much more:
Oprah Winfrey sits down with actress, activist and New York Times best-selling author Gabrielle Union and NBA superstar Dwyane Wade at their home in Los Angeles for a conversation about their unique path to parenthood. In an exclusive interview, the power couple introduces their beautiful new daughter, Kaavia James, to Oprah and the world. Gabrielle and Dwyane candidly discuss their struggles with fertility, the stigmas that surround the use of a surrogate and the backlash they’ve received on social media. Gabrielle shares what she’s learned about motherhood from her stepsons and the hurdles the couple has faced raising young African American men in today’s society. Dwyane also opens up about his decision to take paternity leave from the NBA.
In the trailer below, Winfrey delves into how Gab felt when she read the critical comments online.
We applaud Union for sharing her truth on such a public forum and can’t wait for “Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby” to air on Saturday, December 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on OWN.
