Ever since his turn as Chiron in the Oscar winning flick Moonlight, Trevante Rhodes has been turning heads. The Louisiana native’s rugged good looks, mega-watt smile and toned physique immediately garnered him a spot amongst Hollywood hottest. Since, the 28-year-old has kept a steady flow of work in films like 12 Strong and The Predator, but may have fallen off some of y’alls radar.
Now with a leading role in the new flick Bird Box, we thought we’d remind you why he’s still bae and worth watching on Netflix this weekend.
HE HOLDS HIS OWN OPPOSITE SANDRA BULLOCK
In Bird Box Bullock plays a mother of two who ends up trapped in a house with 10 strangers after an apocalyptic plague hits earth. To survive they must remain blind-folded because if they see it, they will die.
Rhodes plays one of the survivors who eventually forms a bond and relationship with Bullock, and the two share a lot of scenes together. But according to Rhodes he wasn’t at all intimidated or nervous by the thought of working AND kissing Bullock. “Sandy is such an amazing person,” he told us during the films’ press day. “So to share a space with someone who is there (at that level) and is present is always dope.”
HE’S A STRONG BLACK FATHER FIGURE
How often do we see this on film? In the flick Rhodes eventually becomes a father figure to Bullock’s two children and forms a bond that will definitely melt your heart.
HE’S GOT BRAINS AND BRAWN
Besides being eye-candy (spoiler alert: he takes his shirt off in one can’t-miss scene), Rhodes is also extremely resourceful and smart and is pivotal in helping the group stay alive.
HE CAN HANDLE A REAL-LIFE CRISIS
Rhodes also told us in a real-life crisis he’s more of a flight kind of guy and would use his track-and-field background to escape danger. “I’d probably run as fast as I could and find somewhere to hide and hope there was food and water to last for a while,” he said.
HE’S PRETTY HANDY WITH A BLIND-FOLD
To prep for the role Rhodes trained with an actual blind man to learn how to maneuver while blind-folded. The result? He can function pretty well in the dark. “Once you get comfortable, it was functional. I don’t want to say easy, but it was functional,” he explained. We think this skill will also come in handy in other areas of his life. (insert wink emoji).
Bird Box, also starring Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, BD Wong, Sarah Paulson and John Malkovich, hits Netflix December 21.
