Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade Reveal Daughter’s Name Is Kaavia … What Does It Mean?

What’s in a name?

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade welcomed a beautiful baby girl just a little over a week ago, but had not revealed their daughter’s name — until now.

Wade took to Instagram to tell the world what his only daughter’s name is. Well, actually he didn’t tell us, he showed us!

Kaavia James Union Wade! That’s a lot of name, but what does it all mean?

The name, most likely pronounce KAH-VEE-AH, is of Indian (Sanskrit) origin and means “A work of art”. Additional meanings suggest that in Kalabarian philosophy, it means you have an appreciation for “beautiful and refined aspects of life–music and art, literature, drama–and the outdoors, where you find much peace and relaxation, but it creates a far too sensitive nature.” As the daughter of an actress, this is befitting!

Traditionally, James has been regarded as a boys’ name. However, in recent years, more and more girls have donned the moniker. The name derives from the Hebrew name Jacob. It means “supplanter,” one who follows.

Initially, we wonder if Wade used the name to pay homage to his homeboy and former Miami Heat teammate, LeBron James. However, we know now the name actually honors Gabby’s godfather. When a fan asked why they chose the name James, Union revealed the family connection.

Wondering why they didn’t hyphenate? Well, it may be because Gabrielle didn’t when she married Dwyane. Many women choose to keep their maiden name, and essentially make it another middle name, in order to accommodate their new last name. This enables the woman to keep the name she feels connected to, while also honoring her marriage. It’s a beautiful way to honor all parts of your family and honor all of you linage, without feeling like you have to give up one to respect the other.

Congrats again to Gabby and D-Wade!
