DisRESPECT: Why Do People Keep Letting Madonna Do Tributes For OUR Legends!

Published

This is a serious question: After that Prince tribute debacle at the Billboard Music Awards, didn’t we all ban Madonna from honoring our legends? Didn’t we?!?!

Oh, and don’t forget her first failed “tribute”, the “so did I” Michael Jackson speech at the VMAs in 2009. We’re sure that was followed by our first attempt at a ban…

Well, if “we” did ban her, then MTV didn’t get the memo. During the VMAs on Monday night, sure enough, there was a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin. And who hopped their a** on stage to pay homage? Madonna, that’s who. And how did she pay homage? By giving a self-serving 6-minute speech, that’s how.

While donning, nee appropriating, a headpiece “only worn by one small confederation of Berbers called Ait Baamrane” (thanks @SaharAmarir), the “Like A Virgin” singer shared a story about how she sang Aretha’s hit, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, during an audition early in her career. She said the French men she was performing for looked at her like, “Some skinny a** white girl is going to come up here and belt a song by one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived?” She claims she did just that. We call BS, but we digress. Madge finally brought that thang home, and back to the Queen of Soul, by stating, “There is a connection, because none of this would have happened, could have happened without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today and I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight. I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Long live the queen.”

Of course, Black Twitter was not happy — Of course, Black Twitter went in!
