Lee Daniels does not want folks to get his dispute with Damon Dash confused with Mo’Nique. While many believe his owing Dash $2 million for investing in his career helps to vindicate the actress who has claimed Daniels unfairly paid her for her role in Precious amongst other things, Daniels is screaming no way.
While sitting down with TMZ’s Raquel Harper, he made it very clear that Dash has a reason to be upset with him, Mo’Nique DOES Not.
“I think people are confusing the Damon Dash with the Mo’Nique,” he began. “I fought hard for her to get that job. I wanted her to get that job. And she was paid her money. She was paid the money for the budget that we had. And for her to badmouth myself and Tyler and Oprah is disrespectful and it’s wrong. She’s out of pocket. She’s really wrong.”
The comedian, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Daniels’ “Precious,” previously slammed the director, along with Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, for allegedly blackballing her from Hollywood and paying her unfairly for her work on the film, an accusation all involved have vehemently denied
“I respect her [as an] actor because she gave me her soul, but I gave her my soul. And for that she was given the Golden Globe and the Academy Award … and it breaks my heart that she feels that we blackballed her. No one blackballed her. Mo’Nique blackballed her. And for her to continue to speak about Oprah and myself and Tyler is disrespectful.”
In 2015 Mo’Nique claimed Daniels called her and told her she had been “blackballed” because she didn’t “play the game.”
Daniels released a statement shortly thereafter responding diplomatically saying, “Mo’Nique is a creative force to be reckoned with. Her demands through ‘Precious’ were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community. I consider her a friend. I have and will always think of her for parts that we can collaborate on. However, the consensus among the creative teams and powers thus far were to go another way with these roles.”
Since, Mo’Nique has continued to slam Daniels, Perry and Winfrey in a vulgar rant in her comedy show, on her podcast with her husband “Mo’Nique and Sidney’s Open Relationship” and during interviews on The Breakfast Club and The View where she insisted she was the victim.
Daniels it seems has had enough. “She needs to shut up,” he said emphatically. “I would have run with that Oscar opportunity and soared.”
