Winston Duke will finally be returning to the big screen. After his break-out role in Marvel’s multi-billion dollar grossing Black Panther, and riding a wave of success from Avengers: Infinity War, Duke is set to portray former MMA fighter and backyard legend Kimbo Slice in the movie aptly named Backyard Legend.
The fact that they are doing a movie on Kimbo is pretty awesome, not to mention the casting is pretty spot on … here are five reasons why.
Duke Can Pull It Off
After playing the leader of the Jabari tribe in Black Panther, and also almost taking down T’Challa, it won’t be hard to believe Duke as a one man killing machine. He also went toe-to-toe with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and survived without disintegrating … we think he can handle a few near death cage matches.
He’ll Be Shirtless … AGAIN
As if we didn’t get enough of Duke looking all toned and ripped in Panther and Avengers. Now he’ll be back on screening wearing minimal clothes (we hope) portraying the MMA fighter.
He’ll Nail The Accent
Like Slice, real name Kevin Ferguson, Duke is of West Indian decent (he was born in Trinidad and Tobago) and will be able to convincingly portray the Bahamian-born backyard brawler.
He’s Got The Physical Stature
At 6’4 Duke has the size and physical stature to play Slice, who died suddenly in June 2016 at the age of 42 from heart failure and a liver mass. Though he battled high blood pressure for years, Kimbo Slice insisted on boxing months before his death.
Kimbo’s Story Is Unknown Despite His Internet Fame
Slice rose from homelessness to mixed martial arts fame after his brutal backyard fights drew a huge YouTube audience. Michael Imber, Kimbo’s longtime friend, manager and employer and Duke will Executive Produce the project. Said Duke, “I’m looking forward to exploring Kimbo’s story and interrogating the expectations society places on men like him who are their own special breed of hero.”
