If you want your text conversation to stay private … don’t text Kanye West.

His good pal John Legend learned that the hard way on Thursday after a text conversation he had with West about his controversial tweets supporting Donald Trump was then re-posted by West on Twitter.

Legend spoke to Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning about his message to his G.O.O.D. friend and his feelings about having that message leaked to the world.

“I was shocked when it happened. But I was proud of what I said. It can’t be that bad, at least I didn’t say anything I didn’t want people to know that I thought,” Legend said Friday morning.

“I’m not mad if people saw it, at least they know where I’m coming from. But I was shocked for a second.”

In the text message Legend told West to “reconsider aligning yourself with Trump” and also let him know many of his fans felt “betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color.”

“Hey it’s JL. I hope you’ll reconsider aligning yourself with Trump. You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for. As you know, what you say really means something to your fans. They are loyal to you and respect your opinion. So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color,” he told the musician. “Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.”

In response, an unapologetic West said, “I love you John and I appreciate your thoughts. You bringing up my fans or my legacy is a tactic based on fear used to manipulate my free thought.”

Legend told Ebro that despite their differences, he understands why Kanye likes Trump.

“I think Kanye when he thinks about Trump he thinks of him as more of a marketing triumph,” he said. “I think he sees certain aspects of himself in Trump and how brass he is, and how he doesn’t give AF, and how nobody believed he was going to win, and how with a sample message, Make America Great Again, he defied all the odds and beat the establishment.”

“I see why that’s appealing to Kanye, and  I understand what’s appealing about it, he continued. “Politics isn’t just branding and marketing, it’s actual policy that affects people.”

Legend and Ebro also cautioned Kanye about turning his back on the Black community and aligning himself with Trump supporters who are also die hard Taylor Swift supporters. “These Maga folks are over his nuts right now, but as soon as he says something about Taylor Swift they gon’ be all over him calling him every N-word,” said Legend.
