Raphael Saadiq is ready to step back in the spotlight. After years of working behind the scenes scoring and producing music for others most recently Mary J. Blige’s Oscar nominated track, Mighty River, he’s hard at work on his own music.
“I’m working on my new album for Columbia Records,” he told HipHollywood while on the Oscars red carpet. “After this I’m trying to finish it.”
The news comes as a welcome surprise since the self-proclaimed “studio rat” hasn’t dropped an album since Stone Rollin in 2011. He has had a lot of other projects keeping him busy. He wrote Solange’s Cranes in the Sky, which won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance last year and he is also the composer on HBO’s comedy series Insecure starring Issa Rae.
The Oakland native reassured us that his new album will not take him away from Insecure or working on Solange’s next album.
“I’m working on Insecure the next season too and a couple of other shows, but in between those shows I’m working on my record,” he added. “I love to perform so I want to finish my record so I can go be in front of people.”
