Mary J. Blige was the first performance of the 90th annual Academy Awards and it was nothing short of phenomenal.
The singer, clad in a stunning rose gown, hit the stage at the Dolby Theater to perform Mudbound’s “Mighty River,” the beautiful ballad also nominated for Best Original Song.
With a choir standing boldly behind the her, Blige, who is currently going through a grueling and nasty divorce, wore her emotions on her sleeve while belting out the track.
Making the moment that much more magical was Taraji P. Henson introducing the Grammy Award winning star. “Please welcome, the first person ever nominated for best song and supporting actress in the same film, my sister, Mary J. Blige,” she said with pride.
It’s a big night for MJB who is not only nominated for Best Original Song for “Mighty River,” but also for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the highly acclaimed Netflix film.
Joining Mary in the nomination for Best Original Song are Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson, who collaborated with the New York native on the track.
