Mary J. Blige is officially an Academy Award nominated actress all thanks to Netflix’s Mudbound; a film that shockingly made her NO money.
In recent documents filed ahead of Blige’s grueling divorce trial, the actress claims her ex-husband, Kendu Isaacs, needs to stop looking at her like she’s a “bank.”
While Mudbound has become critically acclaimed and might lead the actress to her first Oscar on Sunday night, Mary states in the documents that she netted nothing from the project because of her outgoing expenses.
She explains that although she is a celebrity of high caliber, she does not have the means to pay Kendu an absurd amount in spousal support — As of last year, Mary was already shelling out $30,000 a month to Kendu.
Blige, who claims her main source of income is from touring, also suggests she’s a “legacy artist, there is no market for her to embark on a major world tour every year.”
And while the New York native’s financial woes have made headlines before, it was not apparent that she owes a whopping $25 million in advances. Not to mention, the millions of dollars in debt she and Kendu racked up during their marriage.
The singer, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this year, put it frankly to the courts: Kendu needs to get a J-O-B.
Back in October, Kendu claimed he couldn’t find a job because Mary’s divorce songs, such as “Love Yourself” and “Set Me Free” were hurting his chances with employers. All the goodbyes.
Blige, meanwhile, is a good example of how it’s possible for an A list celebrity to be in the hole financially. It’s apparent that just because someone has a huge name, multiple Grammys, and an Oscar nomination, does not mean they are rolling in dough.
Ironically, Mary used her nasty divorce to pull out the intense emotion for her award winning Mudbound performance. Our thoughts are with Mary.
