Black girls are magic and Disney definitely got the memo. For the fantasy adaption of the best-selling novel A Wrinkle In Time, the studio tapped Ava Duvernay and she couldn’t have been more excited about the opportunity.
“Its a happy night for a happy film,” said Duvernay who is now the first Black female director to helm a movie with a budget over $100 million. “They invited a girl from Compton to make a Disney movie which is incredible.”
Hiphollywood caught up with DuVernay at the L.A. world premiere which was attended by who’s who in Hollywood including the films stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and newcomer Storm Reid who plays lead character Meg Murray.
“She’s a force of nature, she’s aptly named” gushed DuVernay. “You have a little baby in your arms and you name her Storm for a reason.”
Adds Oprah Winfrey, “Talk about a girl whose life is about to explode.”
Also hitting the blue carpet were other amazing Black women taking Hollywood by storm (pun intended) like Janelle Monae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Angela Bassett and more.
