This is by far one of the most unique Grammy opening performances EVER!
Just hours after picking of three Grammys prior to the televised awards shows, Lamar hit the stage with Dave Chappelle and U2 for one hell of a number.
The group performed Lamar’s track featuring U2, “XXX” and “King’s Dead,” a performance Kendrick referred to as a “satire.” Performing with a group of men dressed in military attire, Kendrick dropped his verses before U2 arrived on stage.
Then it happened, Dave Chappelle came out to remind the audience that “the only thing more frightening than watching the Black man being honest in America, is being an honest Black man in America.”
Honest, is certainly what Lamar was, giving a memorable and wildly political performance. The sound of gunshots rang out as part of the set as a way to draw attention to gun control and racism in America.
Following the stellar opening performance, Lamar and Rihanna snagged the first award of the night for Best/Sung Performance for their track, “Loyalty.”
During the pre-telecast show on Sunday afternoon, Lamar picked up three Grammys for best rap performance, best rap album and best music video for his hit, “Humble.”
