Gabrielle Union is out here making major moves. Despite numerous attempts to get a third installment of the Bad Boys franchise to the big screen, Union has managed to get her own spinoff TV series.
Yep, you read that right. According to Deadline, the actress nabbed a deal with NBC to executive produce a show based on her Bad Boys II character Syd Burnett. If you recall Syd is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and was romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith).
Per the announcement the spinoff will focus solely on Union’s character and Smith nor Lawrence are involved. In the show, she has left the DEA and now has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective. She’s partnered with Nancy McKenna, a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom. The two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields.
The untitled project received a pilot production commitment at the network in October. It will be written and executive produced by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, who previously worked together on NBC’s “The Blacklist.” Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the “Bad Boys” films, will also executive produce. Sony Pictures Television Studios will produce in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Primary Wave Entertainment, and 2.0 Entertainment.
Union, who wrapped the finale season of BET’s Being Marie Jane last fall, is also set to EP (along with LeBron James) a project in development at ABC called “White Dave,” which is based on the life of series creator David E. Talbert.
