After one day of deliberations, a New York City jury has found Jelani Maraj, the 38-year-old brother of rap star Nicki Minaj, guilty of predatory sexual assault on a child.

Maraj, who long denied the allegations, was tried in Nassau County, New York. Jurors convicted him on Thursday, November 9 of endangering the welfare of a child and predatory sexual assault on a child younger than 13.

He faces 25 years to life in prison and will be sentenced on December 14.

Maraj was first arrested on charges of raping his 11-year-old step-daughter in December 2015, just months after he married his fiancée Jacqueline Robinson in Baldwin, New York.

During the trial which lasted nearly a month, lawyers for Maraj alleged that Robinson coerced her daughter (now 14) into making false claims to extort $25 million dollars from Maraj’s famous sister.

Minaj never took the stand for her brother, but her mother Carol Maraj testified, saying that Robinson once told her that “It’s gonna take lots of money to get out of this one.”

Meanwhile the victim’s brother, testified that he saw Maraj’s “private parts” touching his sister after he walked in on the two of them in 2015 partially clothed. According to the victim, who also took the stand, Maraj would call her “his puppet”, and would physically attack her when she would refuse his advances.

Following the verdict, Nassau County D.A. Madeline Singas said in a statement: “Justice demanded that this defendant be held accountable for these heinous acts and we are thankful to the jury for their careful deliberation. We hope that today’s verdict will help the family in the healing process and that it will close this terrible chapter in their lives.”

Maraj’s attorney David Schwartz nor his family have yet to release a statement.
