On Monday the world, and black twitter, rejoiced after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, with much emphasis being placed on the fact that a women of color would now be apart of the British Royal family.

But while there is cause for celebration, Markle and Prince Harry aren’t the first interracial royal couple. Besides Markle, whose mother is black and whose father is white, there have been other Black women who married European royalty. Check it out!

Princess Sophie Charlotte

Princess Sophie Charlotte was born in 1744 and later became the first Black Queen of England and Ireland after marrying King George III .  Charlotte was the eighth child of the Prince of Mirow, Germany, Charles Louis Frederick, and his wife, Elisabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Historians suspect that Charlotte, was directly descended from a black branch of the Portuguese royal family: Alfonso III and his concubine, Ouruana, a black Moor.

Princess Angela of Liechtenstein

Princess Angela of Liechtenstein (nee Angela Gisela Brown) is the wife of Prince Maximilian of Liechtenstein. She is the first person of known African origin to marry into a reigning European dynasty in 2000. Together, they have a biracial son, Prince Alfons, who is in the line of succession to the Liechtensteiner throne.

Baroness Cecile de Massy

Baroness Cécile de Massy, born in the Caribbean country of Guadeloupe, is the fourth wife of Christian Louis, Baron de Massy, the only nephew of the late Prince Rainier of Monaco. Together they have two sons. Baroness is the founder and current president of the organization Ladies Lunch Monte-Carlo whose goal is to benefit children and adolescents.

Countess Lei von Habsburg

Countess Lei von Habsburg is an attorney from South Carolina and the wife of Franz Ferdinand von Habsburg son of Archduke Geza of Austria. She is his second wife whom he married in May 2013, in Cape Town. The couple have three children.

Emma McQuiston

Emma McQuiston, is the daughter of a Nigerian oil tycoon. The former model, tied the knot with Ceawlin Thynn, Viscount Weymouth, who is heir to the Longleat estate and the son of Alexander Thynn, the seventh Marquess of Bath. Although McQuiston is currently a viscountess, she would take on the name Lady Bath when her husband comes into his inheritance.

 

Countess Mary Von Habsburg of Austria

Habsburg, a native of Sudan, is the wife of Ferdinand Leopold Joseph Count von Habsburg also son to Archduke Geza of Austria. The couple wed in August 1999, hosting their ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, and have three children, all born in Nairobi. Their marriage was seen as controversial among the public and in royal circles, because of her class as a commoner and her ethnic background.
