Azealia Banks made a fool out of herself earlier this week when she bashed Cardi B on social media. The outspoken singer took exception to Cardi’s “Bodak Yellow” hitting number one on Billboard, saying in essence that the rapper is only getting push from radio and the industry because she doesn’t look Black.
Cardi responded by posting video of Banks getting her life to “Bodak Yellow” inside a New York nightclub. “One of the reasons Bodak Yellow went #1! Cuz even the HATERS love it!” Cardi captioned the video.
Banks, not one to run from a social media feud, kept the debate going. This time she was little more thoughtful in explanation for her love-hate relationship with Cardi and “Bodak Yellow.”
“I like Cardi! A lot, I really do. She’s cute and fun to watch, but your sister doesn’t have bars and she isn’t the right face for female rap right now,” Banks commented IG. “I’m sorry if you don’t understand how one can hold two opposing opinions. You would like this to be about jealousy, but it’s not. It’s about making sure Black men give ALLLLL female rappers a shot at the top slot.”
“There are LEGIONS of Black women who have put so much into this craft, who are better than Cardi and Azealia Banks, who don’t get a chance because Black men don’t want to f*ck them,” she continued. “If that hurts your feelings then fine, BUT female rap deserves more than Cardi B. Black female rappers are entirely too varied and entirely too AUTHENTICALLY TALENTED, thoughtful and INTELLIGENT, INTERESTING to be treated to another dose of stripper culture on the main stage.”
The singer summed up her position, adding, “Cardi is very fun but she’s just simply not the right look for ‘the face of female rap.’ It’s a gimmick that has gone way too far. That is all.”
