Oprah Winfrey has a large and dedicated fan base who are quick to take any recommendation from the media maven, so it will be interesting how they respond to her asking them to give up meat!
In a recent episode of Super Soul Sunday, Oprah hosted Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle to discuss the connection of humans to animals.
“We are in a moment—are we not?” Oprah told Pacelle, “where there is an awakening to a new way of bringing consciousness to how we treat animals around us.”
Pacelle answered, “I think in the last five to 10 years, we’ve started to wake up.” Pacelle offered Winfrey advice on what small things people could do to have an impact on the lives of animals, telling her to go meatless on Mondays. After the show, Winfrey took to Twitter and urged her 33.5 million followers to go meat-free.

This isn’t the first time daytime’s hottest host has publicly denounced red meat. The meat industry sued Winfrey 20 years ago because she said publicly that she was swearing off of hamburgers and beef futures plummeted on the stock exchange. Luckily Oprah won that lawsuit, saying “free speech rocks!” and adding “I’m still off hamburgers!”
Will you try meatless Mondays?
