Not up in here! Betsy DeVos was showered by a wave of boos on Wednesday while delivering the commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida. How the hell DeVos ended up delivering a commencement speech at a HBCU is beyond us, and apparently, everyone attending the ceremony not seated on the stage.
To exacerbate audience response, the supremely under-qualified Secretary of Education was given an honorary doctorate from school President Edison O. Jackson. That gives us profound understanding of the thousands of petitions signed calling for Jackson’s resignation.
Jackson embraced his Uncle Tom role, however, when he told students standing up and turning their backs to DeVos, “If this behavior continues, your degrees will be mailed to you. Choose which way you want to go.”
“One of the hallmarks of higher education and of democracy is the ability to converse with people with whom we disagree,” DeVos told the jeering audience. “We can focus on differences that divide us, or we can choose to listen and learn from each other’s experiences.”
This episode comes just days after DeVos’ boss, President Donald Trump, said that funding for historically Black colleges may be unconstitutional.
