Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson delivered a powerful acceptance speech on Sunday night after picking up an award for Best Fight Against the System.
“If it were not for those women, we wouldn’t be in space and not only that, the message of this movie is togetherness,” she said while accepting the award on behalf of her costars. “Like I hate the separatism: man vs. woman, black vs. white, gay vs. straight.”
Henson, who turned heads in a stunning, long-sleeved rose gold Emilio Pucci gown, continued, “Whatever. We are all humans, right? God is very clever. He made us all different for a reason. So we better figure it out. I love you.”
What made the moment extra special was the surprise cameo by Maxine Waters, who presented the award alongside black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross.
The pair stood with such grace and dignity while discussing creating change on such a large platform. “Artists, actors, singers and citizens have a unique opportunity, the ability to speak out and inspire change,” Waters said.
Speaking of the category’s nominees including Loving, Get Out, Luke Cage and Mr. Robot, Maxine said, “Each of these stories pushes back against the bullies and uses their platforms to inspire us all.”
