This year’s Grammy Award for Album of the Year was given to British singer, Adele. The singer, however, suggested during her acceptance speech that Beyonce should have received the honor for her album, Lemonade. And now, according to Justin Timberlake, it’s Frank Ocean who should have been the recipient of the trophy.
On Thursday afternoon, Timberlake tweeted that the new Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean and Migos track, “Slide,” was fire. The singer then took the opportunity to mention the Grammys.
He wrote. “While I’m at it… Frank Ocean had the real Album of the Year with ‘Blonde.'”
Timberlake isn’t the only star to suggest Ocean should have been nominated for his 17-track LP.
In October 2016, Kim Kardashian’s husband threatened to boycott the 2017 Grammy Awards after Ocean’s album Blond and Endless became ineligible for this year’s ballot.
Ocean also skipped out on the Grammys after not being nominated for one of the biggest categories. He recently revealed to The New York Times that the academy “just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”
He added, “I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated … I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience.”
Ocean also spoke out following this year’s awards show and referred to Kendrick Lamar’s Album of the Year loss to Taylor Swift in 2016.
“I’VE ACTUALLY BEEN TUNING INTO CBS AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR FOR A WHILE TO SEE WHO GETS THE TOP HONOR AND YOU KNOW WHAT’S REALLY NOT ‘GREAT TV’ GUYS? 1989 GETTING ALBUM OF THE YEAR OVER TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY. HANDS DOWN ONE OF THE MOST ‘FAULTY’ TV MOMENTS I’VE SEEN. BELIEVE THE PEOPLE. BELIEVE THE ONES WHO’D RATHER WATCH SELECT PERFORMANCES FROM YOUR PROGRAM ON YOUTUBE THE DAY AFTER BECAUSE YOUR SHOW PUTS THEM TO SLEEP. USE THE OLD GRAMOPHONE TO ACTUALLY LISTEN BRO, I’M ONE OF THE BEST ALIVE. AND IF YOU’RE UP FOR A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE CULTURAL BIAS AND GENERAL NERVE DAMAGE THE SHOW YOU PRODUCE SUFFERS FROM THEN I’M ALL FOR IT. HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.”
