Moonlight director Barry Jenkins delivered a short and sweet acceptance speech after winning Best Picture during Sunday night’s Academy Awards, but what we are now learning is that the speech almost didn’t happen.
On Monday night, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel addressed the final moments of the show when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong winner for Best Picture.
As we all saw, commotion instantly plagued the stage after producers from La La Land accepted the biggest award of the night that oops, actually belonged to Moonlight.
After the real winner was revealed, Jenkins and company jumped up on stage to accept the coveted trophy. But according to Kimmel, it was Denzel who reminded the late night talk show host to let Barry give his very well deserved acceptance speech.
“Barry Jenkins is standing behind me and Denzel wants me to get him to the microphone to make a speech, which makes sense,” Jimmy said.
According to reports, the mix-up happened because Warren was given the duplicate copy of the Best Actress winner (Emma Stone, La La Land), which was announced just before Warren and Faye announced Best Picture.
