Donations are pouring in for the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Mississippi. The predominantly Black church was set on fire Tuesday night. The person responsible also spray painted “Vote Trump” on the side of the building.
Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons called the incident “a heinous, hateful and cowardly act” in a press conference Wednesday. “This act is a direct assault on people’s right to freely worship,” he said. “We will not rest until the culprit is found and fully prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
“This happened in the ‘50s and the ‘60s,” he added. “This should not happen in 2016.”
