Prince Harry released a statement on Tuesday regarding the egregious mistreatment and disparaging remarks made about his interracial relationship with Los Angeles native Meghan Markle.
Harry and Meghan’s relationship became an international story last month after just a few weeks of going public. Unfortunately, Meghan, best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the legal drama Suits, has faced major scrutiny for her courtship and the Prince is fed up.
“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment,” the statement read. “Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper, the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”
According to the statement, the safety of Markle’s mother has also been at jeopardy; this includes the harassment of photographers who have apparently attempted to illegally enter her home in the Crenshaw area of Los Angeles.
Meghan was born to an African-American mother and Dutch-Irish father.
“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” the statement read.
The comment suggested, “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”
Harry, who met Meghan at a charity event, released the statement in hopes that the racist and sexist harassment of his girlfriend comes to a screeching halt. In the meantime, it doesn’t sound like Harry will let the media and social media trolls come between he and his girlfriend.
